alternative is to accept a sterling salary if given the opportunity to do so. By accepting sterling I gain financially while in the Colony though I lose on leave and on pension. In addition I have to contribute a larger sum monthly to the Widows and Orphans' Pensione than I do at

present.

4. My present dollar salary and that of Mr. Irving at the time when he was placed on sterling are very similar. Er. Irving was drawing a dollar salary equivalent to 2810 plus 275 personal allowance or 2885 in all. For leave purposes he was privileged to calculate the dollar at 4/- and for persion at 3/8, When promoted I was drawing a dollar salary equivalent to £910 or £25 more than Hr.Irving.

In my case however the dollar is calculated at 3/- for leave and pension. There is this further point in my case that my lat. increment is due within 18 months from the date of my promotion. Our respective cases ere therefore similar and the terms granted to him might I venture to think be reasonably granted to me. Should I be placed on the maximum sterling salary of a ist. Class appointment my salary would be £1,000 per annum plus £150 duty pay as against a maximum of dollars equivalent to £1,080 four

years hence. The latter salary would however be payable

both when on duty or on leave and it could also be the oum

on which the pension would becalculated, As far as pension

prospects are concerned the loss is somewhat serious.Taking for convenience sake a period of 25 years I have served

over 18 years in the Colony ) my pension if on a dollar

salary would be 2540 per annum as against £500 per annum

if on sterling.

5. In conclusion I might point out that owing to the

lack of vacancies my promotion to Class 1. has been delayed.+
